About Our Steinway
The Steinway Grand is the gold standard of musical instruments, representing over 160 years of dedication to craftsmanship and uncompromised expression. Our 1878 Heirloom Steinway Model B is one of the finest vintage Steinways in the world — rebuilt, Steinway factory-restored and hand-refinished to look and play like new. Often referred to by pianists as the perfect piano, this wonderfully balanced and versatile black satin instrument measures 6 foot 8 inches in length and 55 inches in width and weighs 700 pounds.
The one piece continuous bent rim is one of the most significant technical innovations in piano building. Comprised of 16 layers of hard rock maple, the thick rim provides the foundation for beauty, stability and quality, enabling a Steinway to endure for generations. This unique rim structure has been an integral part of every Steinway since it was developed and patented by Steinway & Sons in 1878.
On this particular piano the soft pedal action is opposite of today's standard. It moves the keyboard to the right. It also has 85 keys. This piano is 100% certified by Steinway.
This piano was made when Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg's company (Steinway and Sons, March 5, 1853) was 25 years old.
From the Steinway site: "The origin of this instrument dates to 1871 with the development of the Steinway 85-note Style 1 grand. Modified and renamed the Model B in 1878, it is a wonderfully balanced and versatile instrument and enjoys unrivaled renown as a performance instrument in countless venues from the teaching studio to the recording studio, from the concert hall to the home. Today the Model B is the second-largest concert grand piano handcrafted by Steinway in New York City."
We keep this piano tuned. If you'd like a special tuning for your recital please let us know well in advance. If it's within our regular tuning cycle there is no charge.
